Tornikos, Leo
   Nephew of Constantine IX (q.v.); governor of Iberia (q.v.) who revolted in 1047. The revolt was put down quickly, as was the previous revolt of George Maniakes (q.v.) in 1043. Tornikos drew supporters from Macedonia and Thrace (qq.v.), especially from the military base in Adrianople (q.v.), where the dissatisfaction of the western military establishment with Constantine IX was particularly intense. Tornikos marched on Constantinople (q.v.), but his army melted away when he failed to gain entrance. He was hunted down and blinded.
